Instant Delayed Karma

Much like Zoot's experience with allergies, I am now suffering the karmic consequences of rolling my eyes when other mommybloggers cried diaper rash.

Oh, come on. How bad can it be? It's a rash.

Um? Why didn't you guys explain?

Alliclaus' morning diaper change was fine. Everything was normal. Then, while I was at work, she refused to eat breakfast. Andiclaus finally gave in and put her down for her morning nap. She slept for less than an hour. Andiclaus got her up and after finally getting her to eat breakfast, he changed her diaper.

She had loose stools (TMI?), but what was shocking was what he found once he cleaned her up. She was completely red and inflamed and was BLEEDING! Whu? You guys did not warn me about this!

Because he wanted to check out what was going on with the bleeding(!), our pediatrician had us come in. Apparently, her skin is burned from the pH of her stool. (Did you know that could happen? I most certainly did not!)

We made it more than a year without a single diaper rash. I have to say that I'm a little bit concerned that it's related to her diet. Until a week ago, she ate primarily organic baby food. At her 12-month checkup, the doctor was very firm that she should be eating whatever we're eating.

But Andrés is Mexican-American. We eat a lot of, well, flavorful foods. Even when we aren't eating salsa, there's a lot of acidic foods in our diet. The doc was pretty sure that it wasn't the table food that caused this, but instead some type of bug she picked up somewhere.

Every diaper change is now a new adventure in torture. I'm having to use this crazy udder ointment on her that the doctor swears is not the same as A&D. He told me, "It's going to burn when you first put it on." Oh. Well, great. Since she's already screaming and all.

Since you didn't tell me this could even happen, I now believe that you are responsible for telling me how long it will last.

Oh, I am not looking forward to this! My friend's 16 mo old boy has neon red diaper rash and she said it is taking forever to go away. Those poor little bottoms!!

Ugh. We have yet to have a diaper rash, but my friend Rhonda had the "bleeding" experience you did. I have no idea to tell you regarding a timeline, though.

I agree with the doc that it was probably some sort of stomach bug. A diaper rash like that is NOT normal and is indicative that something is wrong. I am only saying this to try and be encouraging that it was probably not the normal table food that you guys eat. Of course ,you know my stance on toddlers eating table food, so take what I say with a grain of salt. Of course, you probably know to do that, as well. :-)

hang in there!

You might want to look back in Amalah's archives. She had that whole diaper rash comment thread thing with all kinds of ideas.

Walker never had one diaper rash, never, but Jace makes up for it. Antibiotics, orange drinks and blue drinks make him break out in a horrible rash...amazes me how he can stand it.

Awww poor girl. I remember a few of those on my girls bums and new teeth coming always seemed to be the culprit. We did alot of baths, letting the old bum hang out in the air and creams.

Poor all of you! That sounds horrible. I hope she's doing much better today.

Nothing worse than a bad diaper rash. Becca never had many but when sick ugh ... it was so sad ... it hurts thei bums so much!

Sending clear bottom vibes your way!

Oh, those rashes are awful. If it doesn't clear in a few days with what the doctor gave you, try putting a little Monistat on her and the top that with the rash cream. Sometimes yeast settles in to those types of rashes and the rash cream alone won't do the trick.

OH NO! It doesn't happen to Lady often (when it does it's usually because she's got the runs), but when she gets diaper rash the ONLY thing that will work for her is Butt Paste, you can get it at CVS. It's super mild too, so it doesn't sting when it goes on and usually clears up the rash in a day, maybe two days if it's super bad. Ugh, but she's had the bloody kind of diaper rash. I'd also use super mild wipes (if you don't already) for a few days to give her little bottom a chance to heal.

Poor little Alliclaus!

I heard that Butt Paste is one of the best for curing diaper rash. The A&D with Zinc is what our doctor recommends (and what I use exclusivly), because the Zinc actually helps heal the rash as well as protect from additional trauma. Good luck!

My son absolutely gets that kind of rash from acidic food - usually citrus. Once he went from totally normal to bleeding overnight. I was horrified. I spoke to the doctor about it again today and he said avoid those foods - even if you change the diapers seconds later that nasty poop still causes problems.

Good luck to you & Alliclaus!
