Why Is This Happening?

As you can tell from this post, I don't put a lot of weight into what celebrities have to say about religion. No matter how much I like a superstar (and I do love me some Britney), they are not above my willingness to smack talk them for spouting religious when they are really being damn fools.

So here's the thing. The entire progressive Christian church seems to make an exception for one man: Bono.

I really like Bono. He's certainly a man who puts his money where his mouth is. He has jumpstarted or resurrected a number of human rights campaigns that I love. But let's keep this whole thing in perspective. He's the lead singer for a band. He's not a religious leader and, despite what so many people seem to think, he's not Jesus. (Oprah is another prime candidate for this one.)

I really like his political message. I actually even regularly enjoy his religious message. Here's what I don't care for.

See, my church has a Yahoo! group. That church members abuse. Like crazy. So last night, I get an email (that went out to every member of the church) that is essentially some excerpts from Bono's Rolling Stone interview. (Rikki and Stew, if you've taken yourself out of the group, it wasn't even from you-know-who.) Why is this a valid email to send out to every member of our church? And, while we're on the subject, while I certainly believe that Bono is a Christian, why am I getting an email about how religion is essentially ahistorical (the opposite of what my particular congregation preaches) from the church?

I'm writing this at 5:30 in the morning, so it actually may not make sense, but come on. I think you get my point.

Bono isn't Jesus? Wait now I am confused!?!

We get stuff like that in my school yahoo group. Random stuff that totally should not go out to everyone and usually makes the sender look retarded. I think it is the risk of Yahoo groups!

Oh technology sometimes you seem so wonderful...
